AT THE TABLE: Banana and Cream Cheese S'Mores

Sometimes the simplest of things can enrich our lives in ways that you couldn't imagine, as was the case this weekend when we were treated to these delectable (and easy peasy) s'mores at a friend's gathering over the weekend. You might be thinking that s'mores are nothing new, so how come all the excitement over some marshmallows and graham crackers?
To say that they were so delish that they bowled over even the snobbiest of s'mores connoisseurs (that would be my better half who actually used the word 'divine' as he dug into one!) would only begin to tell you why this is being shared with you today but what really made an impression on me a few nights ago in my friends backyard were the kiddies that seemed to come to life in the heat of late twilight over a makeshift fire and s'mores. These children, mine included, had spent the majority of the evening with their heads hunched over, staring expressionless into the tiny handheld gadgets they carried around with them, barely making any verbal contact with anyone, save the occasional comment to each other about the game they were playing. The adults, who had started to congregate outside, some by the edge of the pool, others around a gorgeous fire pit that our friends were christening that night, engaged in parental mumbling about their children not enjoying the outdoors like they used to many moons ago and that they had given up trying to 'breathe some life into them' like one dad proclaimed.
And then a funny thing happened.
As we started to talk less of the trials of parenthood and more about 'remember when we used to do this' and 'wow, I almost forgot about that night', the evening's hostess brought out a tray with all the ingredients to make this s'mores recipe she had found while reading the daily paper earlier that week. As we worked on our s'mores in that wonderful warm evening breeze, the scent of melted marshmallow and gooey chocolate started to waft into the house through the screen doors and windows. One by one, the young zombies that we had brought with us started to drop the iPhones, DSi's and what have you for- now hold on to your seats- the company of their parents and a little caveman-like entertainment in front of the fire. All of them, from toddler to teen, came outside, sat down, grabbed a waiting s'more and simply enjoyed themselves. Finally, smiles and chuckles from children who I had kidded earlier about losing the muscles in their faces to actually make an expression. The older ones eventually took over the s'mores prep, talking about the last time they had made s'mores last summer while the littler ones, all jacked up on marshmallow and chocolate by this point, rolled around on the grass and laughed at the adults and each other.
As much as I love all the bubbly and Jimmy Choo's that this delightful life has to offer, nothing could compare to the genuine enjoyment and fun we had seeing these kids come back to life on a quiet Saturday night and all it took was the simple s'more you see below calling their name.

Banana and Cream Cheese S'mores

2/3 cup of cream cheese (160 ml)
8 graham crackers
2/3 cup mini marshmallows
2/3 cup bittersweet chocolate chips
1 banana, sliced into mini wheels

Pre-heat your grill to medium heat.
Use a large square of aluminum foil with a square of parchment paper on top to keep the s'mores from sticking. Spread cream cheese onto graham crackers. Garnish with mini-marshmallows, chocolate chips and bananas. Place in center of parchment. Fold sides of foil over s'mores to create a little tent and press firmly to secure. Tightly seal mini tent at ends to create a pouch and cook on grill for about 5-7 minutes. Open foil tent and continue to cook until marshmallows turn a pale golden brown.

Monday's Muse: Straw, Leopard and Olivia Palermo

Olivia Palermo is always a source of style inspiration for us, this is one lady who constantly looks fabulous! The lovely East Coast socialite and pretty girl about town has a way of pairing high and low pieces like no one else, making her look not just awesome to admire but totally accessible to the rest of us not blessed with Olivia's bank account.

While we love to see her at red carpet events and high society galas, it is her everyday street style that keeps us focused on Ms. Palermo. An essential key to her 'cosmopolitan chic' look is never being seen without a couple of stunning accessories much like the ones she donned while strolling through Soho with her boyfriend in tow.
The simple outfit consisting of a pair of cropped skinnies and white shell is a look you might just see anywhere but it's the bag, bracelet and shoes (did you think we weren't going to mention the divine animal print ballets that made us squeal with delight as soon as we laid eyes on them!!) that give it Ms. Palermo's unique style signature.

In Love With.....JoJo Loves You

Last week, my little girl took another step towards not being such a little girl anymore.
She got her ears pierced.
And since then, she has become obsessed with anything shiny and sparkly that she can attach to those pretty little earlobes of hers!
You know that saying, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree? Well, the Lemontree ladies are living proof of that! I remember being the same way when I got my ears pierced and come to think of it, I still am. I can gaze for hours at fab little baubles meant to grace our ears, which is just what I did this week when I came across a marvellous site called JoJo Loves You.

The most adorable earrings in every colour of the rainbow, definitely something to tickle everyone's fancy!

My daughter and I couldn't keep up with all our ooh's and aah's over these darling baubles especially when we came across these Clear Party Bling lovelies that just so happened to look very similar to the earrings the Duchess of Cambridge wore awhile back while watching her prince play polo!

(The mere mention of Kate Middleton's name around here and you are golden, she has not stopped talking about the princess' earrings for days!)

And if looking like a princess isn't enough for you, the ever so lovely Bostonians over at JoJo Loves You are having their awesome Annual Memorial Day Sale going on right as we speak.
The sale runs till Monday, May 28, 2012 so head on over there asap and toast the long weekend with a new pair of pretties!

The Cocktail Hour: The Scarlett O'Hara

While I am a big fan of the hot summer sun, humidity and I are not friends.
Today was one of those uncomfortably sticky days that signal the arrival of summer weather in Southern Ontario. Having more than a few errands to run about town, I knew when I left this morning that I would return home a little tired and well, let's just say a tad more irritable than usual. My husband must have known it too since he welcomed me home with dinner on the table and one of these delicious cocktails by the front door!
One of my absolute summer favs, a crisp and slightly tart Scarlett O'Hara was originally mixed in 1939 to promote the iconic film 'Gone With The Wind'!
I do declare this the perfect way to end the day!

Scarlett O'Hara

50ml Southern Comfort
50ml Cranberry Juice
25ml Lime Juice

This delish cocktail needs to be served chilled so fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour all the ingredients into the cocktail shaker and shake for three minutes until icy cold. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a small slice of lime.
If you are feeling like a bit of a fancy pants tonight, replace the slice of lime with some shavings of the lime's rind (courtesy of a little potato peeler handiwork) and twist it into a curl!

On the Cover: Reese Witherspoon at Glamour UK

Regular readers here at Lily Lemontree know that we are absolutely gaga over Ms. Reese Witherspoon and after looking at these divine images, can you blame us? The pretty southern belle, rumoured to have the finest southern manners in Hollywood, was recently photographed by Simon Emmett for the cover of Glamour UK (March 2012).

On her public persona vs her private self:
"I don't know if people have an accurate picture of me but I like pretty macabre things like the TV show 'American Horror Story'. Literally like the scariest thing ever, like 'The Exorcist' meets 'The Shining'."

On being careful with money:
"I have this fixation about this black leather The Row purse, but it's so prohibitively expensive, I will not allow myself to buy it. I literally go to the store to visit it. Too much money - it feels decadent. I can't wrap my brain around it. If I bought it, I'd only feel upset about it and take it back."

On baring it all (or at least some) in films:
"I don't worry about it. I have the body I earned. I had two kids and I'm still strong and healthy. And you start to have a different respect for your body the older you get. Instead of tearing yourself apart all the time, you start to go 'Oh wow!'"

Her views on plastic surgery:
"I'm not for it. I'm not against it. I have plenty of friends who do stuff and if it makes you feel good, great. But I don't think it's the fix for some sort of unease that you're having about who you are as a human being."
