The Lovely Ones: Doris Day

Doris Day
(Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff)

Did you know.....

1. She was born on this day, April 3 1924 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
2. In 1937, her childhood dream of a dancing career was crushed when a car accident badly damaged her legs. She spent most of her teenage years wheelchair-bound.
3. She is deathly afraid of flying, stemming from some near-accidents in bad winter weather during her time spent touring with Bob Hope during the 1940's.
4. She reportedly did not like "swear words." As a recording artist, she would require anyone who said a swear word to put a quarter in a "swear jar" and she does not allow her songs to be used in movies that contain swear words.
5. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush in 2004 but did not attend the White House award ceremony because of her phobia of flying.

My mother watched her tv show. She loved her wardrobe. Looking back, she was a stylish lady and she had quite the figure. I wasn't a fan of the silly virginal movies in the 60s and her singing was not my cup of tea. But she had a sunny appeal and her voice made millions happy.

She is absolutely gorgeous, thanks for all the info on her I didn't know some of it! I can't believe she released an album last year at 90 years old! XxxX http://thesecondhandrose.blogspot.co.uk/

Dearest Lily,

This was my Mom's favorite and she is just a bit older than Mom is. It speaks of high moral value, the story about the swear words. Something that nowadays has declined so much. High morals will go a long way!
Her last name is clearly German.
Doris Day was a lovely person who contributed a lot to this world.

I love that TCM is dedicating it's prime time slots this week to Doris Day films - great way to catch up with them! We was researching her age last night and read three different ages from 80 to 90!

I had no idea she'd been in so many accidents! I guess they only served to make her more composed!
