The Cocktail Hour: Pumpkin Spice

We've decorated, carved pumpkins into works of art, walked the neighbourhood twice over and successfully led our kiddies off to slumber after they have been fed a belly full of sugared adrenalin. As fun-filled as Halloween is, it is one long night and after all that we have put into it, there is absolutely no reason we shouldn't end the night with a little treat of our own!
Have a fang-tastic evening!!

Pumpkin Spice

2 oz. SKYY Infusions Ginger
0.5 oz. Lime Juice
1 oz. Pumpkin Puree
Slice of Fresh Ginger

Combine all ingredients except ginger slice in a cocktail shaker with loads of ice and shake vigorously. Strain over fresh ice into a Collins glass. Add slice of ginger for garnish.

MRS. LEMONTREE'S GUIDE ON HOW TO BEHAVE HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE: Halloween Manners

The anticipation for tonight's trick or treating has been building up all weekend, my kiddies could barely fall asleep last night. I could still hear them, way past their bed time, whispering about 'who will get the most candy' and 'which house is the scariest in our neighbourhood'. It will reach a fever pitch by 6:00 pm when they will no longer be able to contain themselves as we open the door to take our fright night walk. So it doesn't surprise me that when they walk out the of the house tonight, they will occasionally forget their 'good manners'. That's where we come in, the mothers, fathers, grandparents, guardians and what have you that accompany them. In all the excitement, let's not forget our part in making their night a 'spook-tacular' evening that includes courtesy and care.

1. Be sure to remind them before they start that it is important to say thank you, ring the doorbell or knock once, only visit houses that are welcoming trick-or-treaters and just as importantly, wait their turn at each house. Nothing will spoil the evening faster than having to pick up a crying child (yours or someone else's) that has been trampled by over-eager 'monsters' running to get to the next house. Encourage them (even the shy ones) to greet the person opening the door with a hearty 'Trick or Treat' and finish off with a pleasant 'Happy Halloween'.

2. If the lights are off at a home, respect the wishes of your neighbours and don't allow your children to approach the home, even if you have already mentioned it to them previously. Not everyone celebrates Halloween and regardless of your opinion of the potential 'party-pooper', it is not your place to 'teach anyone a lesson' by letting your kids loose on their front porch. Can you imagine how irritating it must be for your doorbell to go off every 10 seconds for an entire night when you are not interested in opening the door.

3. If you witness rude behavior on the part of your child or children you are responsible for, remind them in an appropriate and gentle way that only good manners and best behaviour are allowed out tonight. Save the longer lecture for a different time, maybe when your child isn't fueled by Halloween adrenalin or around their friends.

4. Be 'present' for the evening. Involvement and attention is one of the easiest ways to fend off bad manners. Leave the cell phone at home and  if you are walking with other adults, don't become so engrossed in your conversation that you forget why you are there, to accompany and supervise your children.
Yes, it might get a little cold tonight and most children can last a lot longer out there than their parents but remember to keep a smile on your face and enjoy the moment

5. Be considerate when setting your time limit for trick-or-treating. Set out early enough that your children will get the most out of their evening without having to cruise the neighbourhood way past the witching hour. 8:30 is usually a good time to aim for approaching your own home, even earlier if you have tiny tots. There is still a lot of evening left (changing out of costumes, exploring piles of candy) before your little goblins will be able to relax, unwind and fall asleep.

6. If you happen to be on door duty tonight, don't miss this opportunity to show your children your good manners! I will never tire of saying that the very best way to teach our children anything (manners, compassion, positivity, etc.), is to lead by example!  Let them see you in action as you dole out the treats and make sure to thank each little ghoul and goblin for visiting!

Wishing you all a boo-tiful time tonight!
Happy Halloween!!

LET THEM EAT CAKE: 'Along Came A Spider' Cake

With one of my most favorite 'holidays' just around the corner, our kitchen has become treat central! Even though my baking skills are far from 'Martha Stewart approved', I can't help but get giddy with excitement when my end product is something as delightfully ghoulish as this!
(The recipe uses a name brand cake mix and frosting which makes it a smidge easier for anyone who is pressed for time but I have been just as successful with this confection when I have made it from scratch.)

Along Came A Spider Cake

1 box Betty Crocker Super Moist German Chocolate cake mix, prepared
1/3 cup(s) grade-A dark maple syrup
1/2 cup(s) pumpkin pie filling
1 tub(s) Duncan Hines Classic Vanilla frosting
Black sanding sugar, for decoration

1.Distribute prepared cake mix between two 8-inch pans coated with cooking spray. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes at 350°F, then cool 10 minutes in pans before turning out onto a wire rack.

2.Ice top of one cake layer with vanilla frosting and place second cake layer on top. Ice entire double-layered cake. Chill in fridge for 15 minutes.

3.Print spider template; cut as directed, and center stencil on cake.
(In the past, I have used a purchased spider template but I find that its slippery surface doesn't adhere to the top of the cake like a template printed on regular paper, adding a touch of difficulty to getting a clean line to your spider. Working with sanding sugar is not for the faint of heart!)
Sprinkle black sanding sugar to cover image, keeping rest of cake clean. Press sugar lightly with fingers to make sure it adheres. Brush off excess sugar and carefully remove stencil.

In Love With...Stella & Dot 'Tribute' Bracelet

Even the chicest of tastemakers want their chance to do some good in this world!
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, there are a ton of ways that one small purchase can pay it forward. Sites are brimming with 'pink' themed items and one of the loveliest I have come across is the 'Tribute' bracelet from Stella & Dot .
The simplicity of this piece with just a touch of pink is initially what caught my eye but it is what it stands for that held my heart! We can honor all those who have had to battle this disease and help towards a future where our daughters, nieces, granddaughters and fellow 'sisters' will only come across the words 'breast cancer' in history books!

Wear it alone or pair it with any of their other beauties, like this combination I found on the Stella & Dot site, who will donate 20 % of all sales of this bracelet to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation but either way, let's all join together in the fight against this horrible disease that has left it's unwelcome and tragic imprint on all of our lives in one way or another.
Well done Stella & Dot !

What She Said...Jacqueline Bisset

The Wishlist: Kenneth Jay Lane's BEE Broach

I am absolutely convinced that my computer issues will be resolved today. Got to stay happy and think positive, which I must admit has been a little difficult this week.
Bear with me my friends, I promise to get back to 'real' posts as soon as everything is in order.

Now onto the very pressing Friday morning task of searching out a little lovely to gaze at.
Enter the crystal 'BEE' broach from Kenneth Jay Lane!
I adore broaches and if you are thinking that the broach is a little, well how do I put this, 'old lady-ish' for someone as hip and young as yourself, think again my lovelies. The broach is on its come-back tour and is making its appearance all over the place!
Always a standout piece, I never sport one without at least a few people commenting "what a gorgeous pin!" And gorgeous was the first word that came to mind when I spied this delight!

Make it your very own by changing up the placement. Wear it in your hair, lose your belt and cinch your garment with it, attach it to your hat, go tres edgy and wear a whole bunch all at once or follow this quick tutorial I found at Already Pretty and make your own DIY broach necklace (this gal is truly an accessories genius)!
The possibilities only end with your imagination and unique style!!

What do you think about the broach? Is it a piece you will be adding to your accessory wardrobe?

The Cocktail Hour: the Jack Rose

It seems the funny ways of modern technology have made a liar of me this week. Just when I thought I had rid myself of a computer virus that has made a mess of my laptop (and my little old blog!), it seems to still be lurking in computer crevices that I didn't even know existed rendering it useless for yet another day.
Not that I don't appreciate the kindness of my daughter for letting me use hers but I just can't seem to get into any serious writing when I find myself hammering away at a tiny hot pink computer with 'Hello Kitty' and 'Monster High' stickers all over it.
Ughh!
If anyone ever needed a spirited cocktail well before the designated witching hour, it is me this afternoon! Since nothing else has really gone my way today, I figure I can indulge in a favorite of mine, the 'Jack Rose'. While this tart beverage is a lesser known member of the 'sour' family, adding a little more grenadine can sweeten it up for anyone who is so inclined.
A cocktail this color always has a way to make me smile, so take that you pesky Trojan!!

Jack Rose
2 oz apple brandy or applejack
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
3/4 oz grenadine
1 lemon twist

Combine applejack or brandy, lemon juice and grenadine in cocktail shaker loaded with cracked ice.
Shake vigorously and pour into a chilled glass.
Garnish and serve straight up.

We're Back!

Running a little slower than usual, the nasty trojan made a trainwreck of my laptop but we are trying to get back to a regular schedule. We've lost a few posts along the way so while we are trying to reclaim them and save the rest of the week, I thought you would enjoy this fabulous tutorial that I found on "25 Ways to Wear a Scarf in 4.5 Minutes"!

It's Enough to Make A Gal Scream!

My laptop was hit with a pesky bug this weekend. You would figure with all the virus software you are 'strongly suggested' to purchase, this sort of thing wouldn't happen but it has so computer clean-up is happening as we speak! My seven year old was kind enough to let mommy use her computer this morning so with fingers crossed, I am hoping we will be back later this afternoon with all the posts that had been scheduled for the weekend and more!

At The Table: Pumpkin Spice Cake

Although autumn technically started on September 23, on the insistence of Mother Nature and her recurring desire to greet the beginning of the school year with unseasonably warm weather, I don't get into the full swing of fall until October. I mark the first signs of the changing season by playing around with the decor in our home, pulling out our warmer jackets and rain boots and of course by adding a little fall flair in the kitchen. It's no secret that I adore the pumpkin and I try to incorporate any of it's touches into our autumn life, especially when the touch is as sweet as this scrumptious confection you see before you!

Pumpkin Spice Cake

3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
1 cup sugar
3 large eggs
1 cup pumpkin purée
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon fresh-ground nutmeg
*Pumpkin Cream-Cheese Frosting

1. Prepare cake pans: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly coat three 8-inch cake pans with softened butter. Cut three 8-inch circles out of parchment paper and fit them into the bottom of the cake pans. Lightly coat the paper circles with butter and set aside.
2. Make the batter: Cream butter until smooth in a large bowl with an electric mixer set on medium speed. Add the sugars and mix until smooth. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition, until the mixture is smooth and light. Set aside. Combine the pumpkin purée, buttermilk, and vanilla in a medium bowl and set aside. Combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, and nutmeg in a large bowl and set aside. In thirds, alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk mixture to the butter mixture, blending well after each addition until smooth.
3. Bake the cake: Pour batter into the prepared pans and bake until a toothpick inserted into the middle of each cake comes out clean -- 35 to 40 minutes. Cool the cakes in the pan on wire racks for 30 minutes. Remove cakes from pans and return to the wire racks until completely cool.
4. Assemble the cake: Place one layer on a cake plate and top with one-third recipe of Pumpkin Cream-Cheese Frosting. Repeat with the second and third layers. Serve or store refrigerated for up to four days.

*Pumpkin Cream Cheese Frosting

1 package (8-ounce) cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup pumpkin purée
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, softened
1 tablespoon fresh orange juice
1 teaspoon grated orange zest
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
4 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted

Blend the cream cheese, pumpkin purée, butter, orange juice, zest, and vanilla in a large bowl using an electric mixer set at medium speed until smooth. Add the sugar and continue to beat until light and creamy, about 5 minutes.

The Wishlist: Christian Louboutin 'Belle 100' Ankle Boot

I am in the grips of a terrible cold this week. Yes, the sun is still shining and the warm breeze blows free every afternoon (it's October, can you believe it??!!) but I am stuck at home with a fever and a box of Kleenex. With  school age children in the house (and breathing all over me any chance they get!), it was bound to happen.
Of course, after nursing the aforementioned kiddies back to health for the last two weeks, mommy was left with a present of her very own!
With my children back at school, I have sworn off any activities (including the computer) for the afternoon and I am off to recuperate in my temporarily child-free home (finally!)....but not before I share these lovelies I spotted this morning!
Gorgeous python, absolute perfection with a pencil skirt or ankle-cropped pant!
(The ankle boot is everywhere this season and since it is not the easiest look to pull off, I promise to be back later tonight with some suggestions on making it workable for anyone, even those of us not blessed with mile long legs like a gazelle!)
Can you guess what I will be dreaming about during my nap!!

A very busy day around here for us (visited the pumpkin patch this morning and now we are off to the zoo, then our Thanksgiving dinner awaits us at my parents house!)
but I wanted to wish all my fellow Canadians a very Happy Thanksgiving!
