Fall Transitions at The Entertaining House

Come visit with me over at the Entertaining House today where I am honored to guest post for the EntertainingMom, who has been having a bit of a go with dear old Blogger lately. Last week she took those darling eyes of hers off the computer for a minute and when she returned, POOF! Her wonderfully funny and insightful blog was gone. Years of writing vanished in a wink! Now, no one can ever accuse the EntertainingMom of not being a resourceful one. She miraculously recovered her blog with the help of a fabulous IT man she found and the Entertaining House is back in business!

Since we are not one of the lucky ones living in California who are still enjoying warm summer temperatures, slipping ourselves out of tanks and sandals and into cashmere and loafers is not always smooth sailing. Mother Nature enjoys playing around with the rest of North America when it comes to early fall weather, one day warm, one day cool. It's enough to drive even the most stylish fashionistas batty with confusion. We have tried to ease your confusion slightly today with our post on the few simple steps we can all take to transition our summer wardrobe into early fall.

MRS. LEMONTREE'S GUIDE TO MODERN MANNERS: Decorum in the Dining Room

Good manners in the dining room don't end when we leave the party or our homes. The need to be kind and courteous is never more necessary than when we are out in diners and restaurants being served a meal. I was out this weekend enjoying a quick meal with my family and was truly left with my mouth hanging open right in the middle of my meal. I had to witness a waitress being berated and treated awfully by a customer. Detailed circumstances matter not in this situation (the customer seemed to be bit of a sourpuss in general).
Restaurants are busy, communication between waitstaff and the kitchen is not always perfect even in the best of establishments and here is a surprise for us all, servers and waitstaff are only human. While it is their paid job ( unfortunately not a very high paying job), in contrast to many people's preconceived notions, this is not always their chosen profession but a necessary duty to provide for themselves and their families. A person donning an apron or clearing a table is no less a person deserving of courtesy, respect and consideration than the stock broker or doctor who comes in to place an order or enjoy a meal.
A more pleasurable dining experience for all is as always, easy peasy in 5 below!

1) Give your server your order efficiently and politely.
Don't keep them waiting till you finish you cell phone call or your conversation with whomever you are dining with. They have other customers to deal with and orders to place with the kitchen.
If you are taking too long and they briefly excuse themselves, don't act offended when they return. They have a job to do as an employee of the establishment, which is to wait on all customers in a timely manner.

 2)  If you have given a complex order and for whatever reason it doesn't arrive to you in the particular way you requested it, don't be so quick to assume that it is the server's fault and take it out on them. Substitutions and changes to menu items should be viewed as an exception to the rule, not your entitled right (this isn't your mommas kitchen). The server might have taken your complex order correctly and the mix-up could have occurred in the kitchen. (Not that this should give us the right to explode about the kitchen staff because our eggs were not poached firmly on the outside and soft on the inside. Requests that are truly complicated, off the menu or out of the norm for the establishment should be saved for your own kitchen or maybe if your lucky, your mother's.)

3) Make eye contact.
Any interaction with another human being should be deserving of eye contact from you, especially when someone has served you and is inquiring as to your satisfaction. When they approach the table to ask if your meal and everything else is okay, pulling yourself away from you steak tartar for 30 seconds is not going to inhibit the enjoyment of your meal. This is also the perfect time for any extra requests like a refill on your drink or extra napkins.

4) Keep your personal conversation just that, personal.
Use your discretion when discussing private matters or engaging in off-coloured jokes when your server approaches the table (they are not invisible entities that float back and forth to your table, take care not to offend their sensibilities when they are within earshot). Assuming you are not in the habit of regaling your mother with the tales of the 'the man from Nantucket' or curse profusely in front of any and all of your family members, show some respect to the person standing in front of your table who could be someone's mother, child, grandfather, etc. Coarse language is never the norm, especially in front of strangers, regardless of how you try to justify it.

5) In a foul mood? Take it elsewhere.
A server or waitstaff should never be viewed as your own personal punching bag. They have nothing to do with your personal or professional life, like many other people we come into contact with, and should not be made to suffer with rude behaviour and crabbiness due to a foul mood or unpleasant disposition. If you are having a bad day, do all involved a favor, stay home and make yourself a sandwich.

INSPIRATION :: On the Cover: Drew Barrymore at Harper's Bazaar

I recently had a friend comment on how much she likes the 'On The Cover' series but said she wondered why I always chose Harper's Bazaar covers. I wanted to correct her and tell her that my final choice wasn't always HB but since she did start her query with a compliment, I let it slide! I was going to explain the method to my 'On The Cover' madness but along came this gorgeous cover shoot with Drew Barrymore (October 2010) that said it all for me. Only Harper's can take a gentle flower child like Ms. Barrymore and give us a shoot so glamorous, chic and seductive. Month after month. they never disappoint and always leave us waiting in anticipation for next month's issue to arrive.

DECOR :: Twin Beds

My son has been under the weather the past week and a half, which has meant that I have spent a few too many sleepless nights as of late. Obviously, the main reason that the sandman has been staying away is that he wakes up a few times throughout the night wanting to wipe his nose or for a glass of water, etc. but also because I have been sleeping on a very uncomfortable air mattress in his room. Yes, I am one of those mothers, the slightly paranoid type that needs to make sure his laboured breathing is just from a stuffy nose and nothing else, all that silly stuff moms think about when their child is sick and they themselves are light-headed from sleep deprivation.

Now, just so that you don't get the wrong idea, this is not a 'poor me' post, I am going somewhere with this, albeit our road to the meat of the matter might take a slightly winding road today.
As I laid down on my makeshift bed last night, I thought how lucky I was that there was enough space in his room for my air mattress. His room is small and with all the other things little boys need in their bedrooms to make it their 'space', it doesn't leave much room for anything extra. As I laid there looking around his room, I thought back to the first time we had walked through our house, when another family called it their home. I remember thinking how much smaller I thought this room was (I believe I had referred to it as an extra linen closet!) and as I was trying to figure out why it so much larger now, I remembered that the previous family had a double bed in there for their 4 year old, as opposed to my sons twin bed.

As my mind started to wander, I realized that almost everyone I know has their children sleeping in a double bed (could it be, just maybe, another way we force too many aspects of adulthood onto our young children??). I couldn't help thinking about the poor old twin bed and how it fell out of favor.
I have always had a fondness for the twin bed. Maybe I am harking back to a time when even adults slept in twin beds (okay maybe it was only in the TV land bedrooms of the Ricky Ricardo's, the Rob Petrie's and the Fred Flintstones!) or maybe I am reminiscing about my own childhood bedroom complete with not one but two twin beds, there just in case my little brother needed to escape from the under-the-bed monsters in his own room.
What ever the reason may be, I love the twin bed!

Am I alone in my love of the twin bed?
What do you think about the twin bed? Love it or not so much?

Easy on a Sunday Morning: Biscotti, Twitter...and the Beach

The end of summer is upon us friends. The temperatures have dropped, at least for the weekend, but I thought that we would have one last Sunday morning with a view of the sand and sea!

Due to the autumn winds blowing in for a visit, maybe something a little warm and toasty might be in order today. Since I need my morning jolt of caffeine, I have poured us some frothy cappuccinos and what goes nicer with a hot cappuccino than some delicious biscotti, pumpkin spice biscotti I might add!
Want the recipe for these tasties?? Then the Entertaining Kitchen is where you will want to head!

On a search for a little gift for a friend, I stumbled upon a delightful site, Flapperdoodle. The artist behind the doodles is Kate Gabrielle and she is simply fabulous! Stationery, playing cards, prints and a bunch of other goodies I know you will love! Click on any of the links here or above and you can find her on Twitter here.

Speaking of Twitter, yes Lily has joined the rest of the world in the 21st century and has started tweeting up a storm. Not sure what to make of it just yet, but I must say that it is an ingenious way to connect with new people with shared interests and with some not-so-new people that you have lost touch with. One of those people I have recently re-found is the uber-talented Danielle, the lady behind Lucky Life Parties. In the 'what a fabulous idea' department, click on the link above or here to read her latest post on the chicest cheese palettes I have ever seen.  Perfect to pass around to guests, who doesn't like to nibble while they mingle!

A few weeks ago, I was the lucky winner of a smashing 'Bella Cupcake Couture' cupcake wrapper giveaway at Housewife Bliss. I know, I know, I am sure there is not a soul out there in blogger-land who isn't already  familiar with Ms. Bliss and her super blog but did you know that she is now ready for business as well as blogging?!?!
The Market Place is open and lucky for us, for it is chock full of delights all 'blissful' homes should not be without!

Did you know dear friends that Lily Lemontree has a website? It has been kicking around for awhile and we are presently updating our site with a bunch of new features, one of which is an international directory of etiquette trainers and experts. We are sending a call-out to trainers and experts who would love to join us!
Please leave us a comment or email us directly here with your contact information and join our growing list of etiquette doyennes!

Wishing you a super Labor Day Weekend!
